Fishing Derby postponed due to cold weather
MILFORD — The 18th Annual Pike County Commissioners Fishing Derby will get off to a late start this year. The derby generally is on Opening Day of Fishing Season, which is April 12 statewide this year, but due to cold weather Lily Pond is still frozen. Fishing begins at 8 a.m. and goes until noon.
Lilly Pond is stocked the night before the derby with trout ranging in size from 13 to 24 inches. There have been as many as 2,100 trout put in the lake the night before the event. On Derby Day there are about 225 kids with as many as 275 showing up with their parents. This is an “under 16 years old event.”
Lily Pond is located off state Route 6 just south of I-84 at Schoppe Road.
Last year there were kids and parents all around the banks of Lily Pond fishing.
The county provides free reels, bait and hooks for kids but most bring their own equipment. Bait and fishing rods will be available but supplies are limited. Call the commissioners' office for information or to reserve a rod at 570-296-3569.
