The 15th annual 2014 Port Jervis Soap Box Derby will be held Sunday, June 8 on Sussex Street in Port Jervis. Racing begins at 8:30 a.m. and continues throughout the day. Opening ceremonies will be held at approximately 12:30 p.m.

As racing commences, local drivers will compete to win a chance to go on to Akron, Ohio to represent Port Jervis in July at the All-American Soap Box Derby. Racers will compete in four divisions: Stock, Super Stock, Masters and Super Kids Several of Port Jervis’ previous champions will be racing this year along with many newcomers to the sport.

After it ceased in 1957, the derby was resurrected in Port Jervis 15 years ago. The first year the derby came back to life drew 38 participants in one division. Now, the event has grown to more than 140 racers competing in four divisions and is closely monitored by more than 2,000 spectators on race day.

The Port Jervis event has now grown to be the largest local race city in the world.

“We are thrilled to have our communities come together each year and that we have now become the biggest local race in the world,” said Derby Director, Wayne Addy. “We have lots of fantastic people that make this event possible and we do it all for the kids. There’s nothing like seeing their faces on race day.”

Children ages eight to 19 race the clock to become one of Port’s champions who then go on to Akron, Ohio to compete in the All-American Soap Box Derby Race. A Champ in each of the four divisions will win a trip of a lifetime to represent Port Jervis in this International Race in July.

This year’s event is being sponsored by several organizations including its key sponsors: Kolmar Laboratories, Shoprite of Montague, N.J. and Pocono 96.7, 106.9 WYNY and Country 107.7.

Derby Day is Sunday, June 8 this year and takes place on Sussex Street in Port Jervis, N.Y. throughout the day and include racing and food and craft vendors.
