WALDEN, N.Y. — The Walden-based Hudson Valley Honor Flight has announced its spring Washington, D.C., schedule and is inviting Pike County veterans to participate.
Two flights will take veterans to visit the nation’s war memorials on daylong trips, leaving from airports in the region.
The first, called Mission 15, is scheduled for Saturday, April 8, from Stewart International Airport in Newburgh, N.Y., in Orange County.
Mission 16, on Saturday, May 20, leaves from Westchester County Airport in White Plains, N.Y.
Hudson Valley Honor Flight is a nonprofit organization honoring American veterans for all their sacrifices by bringing them to Washington, D.C. to visit their respective war memorials at no cost to them. It is also a local hub of the National Honor Flight Network, which has more than 100 independent non-profit “hubs” nationwide.
Each veteran is accompanied by a volunteer personal “guardian,” who is responsible for ensuring that the veteran’s trip is a memorable one. Guardians are responsible for covering the cost of their trip.
“We are looking for Pike County veterans to join us,” said Board Chairman Frank Kimler. “There are thousands of area veterans who deserve to be honored for their sacrifice to our country. We are hopeful they, their families or friends will contact us and let us know of their interest. The region’s veteran’s organizations have been tremendously helpful in getting the word out and we’re again asking for their assistance to give us names of veterans who would like to make this trip.”
Hudson Valley Honor Flight serves veterans from Pike County, Pa., Orange, Ulster, Dutchess, Westchester, Rockland, Sullivan and Putnam counties in New York; in addition to Fairfield County, Conn., and Bergen County, N.J. Veterans from other surrounding counties are also considered.
