Members of the IUOE Local 825 presented $10,000 scholarships to nine graduating high school seniors recently at the East Brunswick Hilton, including one Milford, Pa., student.

The scholarship money was raised by Local 825 members over a 12-month period through a series of fundraising activities, including a golf outing, a sporting-clays rifle shoOT, a dinner dance and a motorcycle “Poker Run.”

“We hope that these awards will help students reach their potential through higher education,” said Greg Lalevee, Local 825’s business manager. “Given the ever-increasing costs involved, these scholarships mean a lot to the families who receive them.”

Six scholarships were awarded on the basis of academic performance and three were awarded for achievements in athletics, service and understanding of union values, and a Milford, Pa., senior was one of the recipients.

Alyssa Harvey, of Milford, Pa., the daughter of William Harvey, graduated from Delaware Valley High School and was awarded an academic scholarship. While in high school, Alyssa volunteered at the local food pantry and with other organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity and Safe Haven of Pike County.

She plans to attend West Chester University in the fall to study biology and business. Her ultimate career goal is to work in the field of cancer research, forensic science or in the pharmaceutical industry.

This scholarship program is administered by a team of educators from Rutgers University. The Rutgers team evaluated more than 30 applicants, based on transcripts, SAT scores, individual essays and letters of recommendation.
