William J. Devereaux dies at age 69

William J. Devereaux, known as “Billy," died peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2017, surrounded by his family. He was 69.

Son of the late John and Mildred (Wilkinson) Devereaux, he was born on June 29, 1948, in Englewood, N.J., and was then raised in Fort Lee, N.J.  

He was a Vietnam War veteran who proudly served in the 129th Assault Helicopter Company. He then served for 27 years as a firefighter on Truck 12 for the Newark Fire Department, Newark, N.J., before retiring. He was a proud a member of the Marsch Kellogg American Legion Post 139, Milford, Pa., the Vietnam Veterans of America and the Essex Emerald Society.  He was a passionate bagpipe player and throughout his retirement, enjoyed hunting, fishing, training his English Setters, watching Yankees baseball and John Wayne movies.  

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Elizabeth Devereaux; daughter, Kimberly Maurer, her husband, Brian, and grandchildren, Caitlyn and Declan. 

A family statement said: "Bill’s ability to bring people together was incredible and he will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by many family and friends."

Visitation was held at Stroyan Funeral Home in Milford on Oct. 29. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated with the Rev. Alfred Vito on Oct. 30 at Saint Patrick’s Church, Milford.
