Dorothy Eileen (Brannigan) Cooney passed away on May 11, 2018, in Milford, Pa., surrounded by her loving family. She was 91.

Daughter of Joseph S. and Catherine C. Brannigan, she was born Dec. 12, 1926, in Plains, Pa.

She attended Sacred Heart High School, and during World War II trained at Mercy School of Nursing in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., as a member of the Cadet Nurse Corp., a branch of the Army that trained women to serve in hospitals during wartime. She graduated in 1948 as a registered nurse, which was not only her vocation but her passion. She loved her patients and her family, taking care of her parents and many of her mother’s 12 siblings during their later years.

Dorothy and her dear friends Sweeney, Jeanne, Marie, Peggy and Bettilou moved to White Plains, N.Y., as young nurses, where she worked until 1973 at St. Agnes Hospital. She relocated to Shohola, Pa., and worked at what is now Bon Secours Hospital until 1989. She then worked for Drs. Wang and Auerbach well into her 80s, retiring only when computers were introduced into her doctor’s office. She continued to volunteer at blood pressure clinics as long as her health permitted.

Dorothy wed Edward B. Cooney of White Plains on June 21, 1952, and they were married until his death in 2006.

She is survived by their children, Sally Cooney and her husband, David Porter, of New York City; Peter Cooney and his wife, Henriette, of Milford; and Marikate Oset and her husband, Michael, of Yulan, N.Y.; grandchildren, Celia (Oset) Golden and her husband, Justin, Timothy Oset, Elizabeth and Katie Cooney, and Finn Cooney Porter.

She was predeceased by her beloved brother, Joseph A. Brannigan.

Dorothy was a member of St. Ann’s Parish in Shohola.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Ann’s Church, Shohola, on May 15, with the Rev. Thomas Major officiating. Burial followed in German Hill Cemetery, Shohola. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice (karenannquinlanhospice.org).

The family would also like to thank the wonderful and professional staff at Belle Reve Senior Living for all their kindness and caring.

Arrangements were by Stroyan Funeral Home, Milford.
