— Family and friends cheered as she entered the meeting hall. A welcoming committee presented her with flowers. Several officials read proclamations written in her honor.

On Monday night, Milford Township honored Stefanie Neugebauer upon reaching her 100th birthday.

Supervisor Gary Clark read a proclamation from the township, and Jill Gamboni presented a proclamation from PA State Rep. Mike Peifer.

Everyone present sang a rousing rendition of "Happy Birthday, Stefanie."

The start of Neugebauer's life was hard. She grew up poor on a farm in Austria, where she had to walk miles to the nearest schoolhouse. She was orphaned at age seven and raised by her grandmother. She left home at age 14 to find work to support her family.

But, as she grew older, her life got steadily sweeter.

She and her husband, Franz, moved in 1956 to the United States, where they raised their daughters. Neugebauer loved her little country place, where she spent many happy years gardening, hiking, and skiing.

Said Neugebauer to her crowd of admirers on Monday, "I never thought I would be this old."
