May is Older Americans Month: Connect, create, contribute

May is Older American’s Month. This month’s theme is:

• Connect with friends, family, and services that support participation.

• Create by engaging in activities that promote learning, health & personal enrichment.

• Contribute time, talent, and life experiences to benefit others.

Isn’t that so true. Each of us has chapters of our lives, some easy reading and some tortuous maybe, but all brought learning and wisdom to each of us. If people shared some of their “books of learning” to enhance other’s lives, what a wonderful world this would be. Think about that this month, about all you have learned and what you could teach others, whether young or old. It’s never too late to learn from others.

May also has brought us warmer weather with its bugs, and if you live near water, also peepers calling at night when your windows are open. Nice! It is also gardening safe time in Pike County now! No frost warnings anymore please. The Penn State Extension office in Milford or Honesdale and even Stroudsburg has a ton of programs for gardening, composting, trees and shrub pruning. You name it. Check out their website:

The end of Maym the annual Northeast PA Alzheimer’s conference will take place at Mohegan Sun. You can go directly to their website at

We are sponsoring a small number of family caregivers to attend while funding lasts. Call for details (570-775-5550). We are happy to have three families in our Older Relatives as Caregivers program. If you or someone you know is caring for an adult child with disabilities, or are caring for young children under age of 18, our CSP program may be of benefit to you. (some eligibility information is required for participation)

In April we hosted the Wayne & Pike Parkinson’s Group along with the Michael J. Fox Foundation meeting with their annual research update. Great group of individuals who are able to share and network each month at their support group meetings. Look out for the Pocono Fox Trot 5K June 15th at Ann St. Park Milford:

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, an occasion to raise awareness about mental health and its related issues and also to change attitudes related to mental health. If someone you know is having a crisis, their hot line is 24/7 at 800-799-7233.

Don’t forget to thank a volunteer. We would not be in our 30th year at Pike AAA without the dedication and time each and every volunteer has provided us over the years. From meal delivery to answering phones and leading exercises in the center. They enable us to stretch our funding from Welcome Lake to Lake in the Clouds and from Tafton to Millrift! Thank you.
