Russian pianist Ilya Yakushev returns to the Milford Theatre this Saturday to perform "When Art Meets Music," a program that includes Modest Mussorgsky's masterpiece suite, "Pictures at an Exhibition."

Also on the program are "Moonlight Sonata" by Beethoven and works by Tchaikovsky and Liszt, accompanied by projected paintings. Yakushev will play on a grand piano provided by the Yamaha Piano Co.

Reviews of Yakushev's work generally mention his passion and his discipline. The New York Times wrote of him, "Mr. Yakushev can do just about anything he wants.... (He) showed superb control, bringing the music to the brink of hysteria and the piano’s capacity for noise making, without ever letting it get away from him."

The performance is sponsored by Kindred Spirits Arts Programs, a nonprofit organization of volunteers dedicated to bringing high quality performances to Pike County and beyond, and to offering stimulating school programs for children. It is supported in part by Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and by business and private donors.

Yakushev will perform Mussorgsky again next day, on Sunday, May 19, at 4 p.m. in New York City, as part of concert dedicated to the centennial of composer Mieczyslaw Weinberg and also featuring cellist Yosif Feigelson. Find details and tickets at improvis.org.
