“The seniors will be a big loss going into next year, but I feel that we have the underclassmen with the skill, desire and discipline to fill those roles nicely."

It's usually a good sign when, at the conclusion of a winning season, filled with highlight moments and victories, the head coach and athletes on roster aren’t content, but rather show their competitiveness by wanting to have achieved even more.

That’s just what David Peters, the head coach for the Delaware Valley High School baseball program, said when the 2019 campaign ended for the Warriors.

“There’s not a particular game that stands out,” Peters said. “This season has a feeling that if a couple of specific plays went another way we could have been very easily competing for a Lackawanna League Division 2 Championship (instead of finishing second) and hosting a District 2 semifinal game against Williamsport (instead of traveling to Williamsport in a game we lost 2-1).”

Helping to guide the Warriors throughout the course of the spring were a solid group of leaders on the roster.

“My captain’s showed leadership all season long both on and off the field,” Peters said. “Captains are James Conza, RJ Kruse, Eric Peters, and Jack Curraba. In addition, Ryan Wingerter and Devyn Fahnstock showed leadership. All of these players play the game with the intensity, skill and class that should be emulated by future DV baseball players. They simply do things the right way on the field and in the classroom.

“There were no surprises in terms of student athletes who were able to show steady improvement throughout the year. I know what my players are capable of on the field. It’s my job to push them to reach their maximum potential.”

Delaware Valley finished with a solid overall record of 13-6 and were 9-4 in League competition.

“The seniors will be a big loss going into next year, but I feel that we have the underclassmen with the skill, desire and discipline to fill those roles nicely,” Peters said. “In addition, the loss to Williamsport showed the underclassmen the type of competition that they will have to beat in order to win a District championship. I think playing in that game and losing the way we did during the year made players realize the reasons the coaching staff stresses the things we do during season.”

Moving on

Coach Peters said the following seniors will continue their baseball careers in college:

James Conza — Penn State University-Wilkes Barre

Devyn Fahnstock — Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania

RJ Kruse — University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown

Eric Peters — Garrett College

Ryan Wingerter — Penn State University-Wilkes Barre
