The Sparta Historical Society will hold its Spring Antique and Vintage Market, featuring seasonal items, collectibles, and small house antiques to further renovation work at the Van Kirk Homestead.

This sale event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 8, at the Sparta VFW Hall, located at 66 Main Street. Admission is free, and mask wearing and social distancing will be required.

Although renovations are still underway at the Van Kirk Homestead, the society is pleased to say it’s the only museum in the region able to feature period rooms, special history themed galleries, and a major changing exhibition gallery.

Three permanent exhibit galleries opened in 2019, but there is still more to accomplish, such as preserving the garage and turning it into an interactive exhibit, and rearranging the entire house museum, opened now for five years, so that its rooms will have fresh galleries for its expanding collection.

Discover the current exhibit, “Thomas Alva Edison: The Person, The Vision, His Genius,” which includes artifacts on loan from Menlo Park, West Orange, the Edison Foundation, and private collectors. Reservations are free and available through the historical society’s website (vankirkmuseum.org), or call 973-726-0883 for a personal tour. The final day of the exhibit is Sunday, May 23.
