U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D, NJ-11) demanded an investigation into members of Congress whom she said gave “reconnaissance” tours one day before the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

Thirty other members of Congress have joined her in requesting an investigation.

Sherrill’s district includes Sparta, Stanhope, Byram, Hopatcong, and Ogdensburg in Sussex County, as well as parts of Passaic, Essex, and Morris counties.

On a 13-minute Facebook live address, Sherrill, a former Navy pilot, said she saw unidentified members of Congress leading groups through the U.S. Capitol, even though tours were very unusual during the Covid-19 pandemic because of restrictions limiting public access to the building.

The next day, a violent pro-Trump mob breeched the Capitol walls. Five people died in the riot, including a Capitol Police officer. The Capitol Police officers’ union said last week that 140 officers were injured during the rampage.

Sherrill believes President Trump foments chaos and rebellion even as he talks about law and order. She wants him barred from ever holding office again.

“I also want the members of Congress . . . that incited this violent crowd, those members of Congress that helped our President undermine our Democracy,” she said In her Facebook live speech. “I’m going to see that they are held accountable, and, if necessary, insure that they don’t serve in Congress.”

Sherrill said she wants the rioters brought to justice.
