— Recently completed abstract paintings by Sunrise Lake resident Paul Rubino will be exhibited in The Gallery at Chant Realty in Lords Valley from Jan. 1 through Feb. 26.
Weather permitting, a reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7.
Born in New York City in 1951 and raised in Queens, Paul Rubino was an enthusiastic creator of paintings and drawings from an early age, greatly influenced by the sights and sounds of the city. He was educated at the High School of Art and Design and the School of Visual Arts in New York City, and subsequently embarked on a career as a freelance graphic designer, all the while developing his personal vision and understanding of abstract art technique. His work has been shown in galleries around New York City, as well as upstate New York and most recently, in Pike County.
“When I lived in the city in small apartments, my canvases were also small, of necessity," he said. "Since I moved here, they have become larger and more expansive.” Rubino, whose subjects include landscapes, portraits, and still lifes, describes himself as an expressionist.
“In my paintings and drawings, I’m mostly concerned with the surface, and effects of medium and color, trying to create a picture which changes with the light as well as with the line of sight of the viewer," he said. "Medium, available light, and point of view combine to create an image that moves and changes.”
When he’s not painting, Rubino puts his creativity to use in home improvement projects.
A video catalogue of his artwork from 1970 through 2010 can be found at artofpaulrubino.com.
