MILFORD — When it comes to producing talented wrestlers who move on to excel at the collegiate level year after year, Pennsylvania is at the top of the food chain.
Some outstanding teams and athletes can be found all across the state. And anyone looking for a match full of tough competitors on the mat, they need look no further than Delaware Valley High School.
Last season, the Warriors tallied a solid overall record of 16-5, and they were League and District champions. Key returning student-athletes from that team include Travis Norman (junior, 113 pounds), Preston Machado (sophomore, 126/132), Joe Casella (junior, 132/138), Jack Dardia (senior, 138/145), Machias Magill (junior, 138/145), Damien Lobello (senior, 145/152), Jason Henderson (sophomore, 182/195), and Jose Falcon (senior, 220/heavyweight).
Newcomers looking to make a positive impact on the varsity level for Delaware Valley include Conner Crescimano (sophomore, 106), CJ Ross (freshman, 120), Lily Sherer (sophomore, 126/132), Tyler Riker (senior, 160/170), and Gavin Brazanskas (junior, 160/170).
“Jack Dardia and Damien Lobello are two seniors who have valuable varsity experience and did a tremendous job this off season leading by example and giving direction to a rather young team,” Delaware Valley head coach Lou DeLauro said. “Jose Falcon, Machias Magill, Preston Machado and Jayson Henderson are four other individuals who received varsity experience last season on a team that qualified and finished top 12 in the state of Pennsylvania. These six wrestlers will continue to lead and set examples on and off the mat.
“Lily Sherer has been wrestling in numerous National level tournaments this year. She is currently ranked sixth in the country at 132 pounds in the female division.”
The warriors are scheduled to participate in the Lackawanna League Wrestling Championships on Dec. 15 at Wallenpaupack High School.
“Our goals are pretty similar year in and year out,” DeLauro said. “We work towards these goals year round. The goal is always to win our League and District and qualify and place in the State Tournament as a team. When it comes to the individual post season we expect to have several State qualifiers and medalist.
“We are a relatively young team that will improve as the year goes on, and we expect to be a contender and hopefully the favorite to win the league and district. This year the league and district are well balanced, and there will be several teams battling it out.”
