Grey Towers hosts walks and talks
MILFORD — A walk in the gardens and walks in the woods are being offered this May by the US Forest Service at Grey Towers, ancestral home of Gifford Pinchot, founder and first chief of the US Forest Service and two-term governor of Pennsylvania. The estate entrance is at 122 Old Owego Turnpike, Milford, Pa.
On Saturday, May 17 at 11 a.m., visitors can enjoy the historic gardens at Grey Towers National Historic Site on a guided tour that includes the historic Sweet Cherry tree and hundreds of flowering bulbs. Meet Horticulturist Elizabeth Hawke at the Visitor Pavilion in the Grey Towers parking lot and learn about the historic landscape. Call 570-296-9630 for information. $8 adults/$7 seniors. On Saturday, May 19, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Delaware Highlands Conservancy will co-host a Forest Wildlife Habitat Restoration Program beginning with a workshop at Grey Towers. Participants will then have a chance to walk through the projects being conducted on the Milford Experimental Forest following recent gas pipeline upgrades.

On Saturday, May 31 at 5:30 p.m., Grey Towers National Historic Site will be hosting a free, illustrated lecture by art historian Kerry Dean Carso. Carso will demonstrate how John James Audubon’s extraordinary paintings of birds contributed to the development of American national identity and heightened American’s appreciation for wildlife, landscape, and the natural environment. Light refreshments will be provided by the Gifford Pinchot Chapter of the National Audubon Society.
All walks are held rain or shine; sturdy, comfortable footwear is recommended.
Memorial Day weekend
The 2014 Grey Towers regular tour season begins Memorial Day weekend. Guided tours of the mansion are offered seven days a week on the hour from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. On weekends at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. visitors can tour all three floors of the mansion.
