One person is dead and one person is in the hospital after a dispute between neighbors at a residence on Route 2001 turned violent, according to state police.

Just after 1 p.m. on Thursday, November 2, State Police at Blooming Grove responded to the dispute between Howard McElnea, 78, and Jeffery G. VanSlyke, 68, at McElnea’s Route 2001 residence. According to police, the encounter escalated to the point where both men, who were both armed, began to shoot at each other.

VanSlyke was hit by at least one of the rounds and died at the scene, police said. McElnea was struck by several rounds and transported to an area hospital for medical treatment.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 3, to confirm the cause of death. The investigation is still ongoing.

Route 2001 remains closed at the location until the on-scene investigation is concluded. A detour is in place.
