DV defeats Hazleton to earn sub-regional championship title

— Delaware Valley High School defeated Hazleton Area High School in varsity football on Saturday Nov. 10. The final score was 35-14.
The District 2-6 Class 6A sub-regional championship took place at DV in Westfall Township.
The victory is the third straight district title earned by the DV Warriors. DV will play State College Area High School next in the playoffs.
The Warriors lit up the scoreboard first, scoring on their first possession when quarterback Zach Scillia rolled out on a play action on fourth-and-one and hit wide receiver Colin Walters for a 41-yard touchdown. The Hazleton Cougars responded with a long drive concluded with a 13-yard touchdown run by running back Damon Horton with 2:11 left in the first quarter. Horton rushed for 144 yards and one touchdown.
The game was tied 7-7 briefly until quarterback Scillia completed a pass to receiver Hunter Klein for 30 yards on third-and-six. During the followup play, Scillia ran it in on third-and-goal from the 5 on the second play of the second quarter to push Delaware Valley ahead. The extra point kick by kicker Noah Sorrell made the score 14-7.
Quarterback Zach Scillia threw for a total of 159 yards, resulting in one passing touchdown. He also rushed for two touchdowns.
DV pulled away in the third quarter when running back Josh Balcarcel made it to the end zone on a 13-yard run for a touchdown. Balcarcel rushed for 181 yards and two touchdowns.
Hazleton came back to score on a 14-yard, quarterback Ryan "Sparky" Wolk to receiver David Smith touchdown pass, with 5:38 left in the third quarter. Kicker Will Barrientos's extra point kick was good, but Hazleton remained behind by a score of 28-14.
DV kept Hazleton contained for the remainder.
