— It’s an annual event designed to bring some comfort and joy during the holiday season to the patients of Bon Secours Community Hospital and the residents of St. Joseph’s Place Long Term Care facility, which is located in the hospital.

Volunteer staff members, both singers and musicians, dubbed “The Christmas Carolers,” often joined by other hospital employees, play and sing traditional carols as they move from room to room and unit to unit.

And this December, as usual, they brought holiday cheer to the Med-Surg/Telemetry, ICU and Behavioral Health units, as well as, to the residents of St. Joseph’s Place.

“This is such a moving experience to the patients and staff alike,” said Nurse Manager Karen DeStefano, DNP, RN. “Mostly, the patients and their families enjoy to request and sing-a-long to their favorite songs and sometimes the Christmas Carolers illicit tears of happiness of fond memories. Even those patients that cannot participate in singing are seen smiling, moving, and engaged. At the end of the day, when the Christmas Carolers are thanked for spreading holiday cheer, their response is, ‘Thank you! It is always our pleasure to play and sing, for this is what we live for.”

Bon Secours Community Hospital is a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network.
