  • Violinist Yuri Turchyn

The Mostly Jazz Trio with special guest Yuri Turchyn will start off the three-day Milford Music Festival at the Columns Museum in Milford with a performance from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, June 21.

The trio features the outstanding artistry of guitarist Butch Campbell, who has worked with some of the most notable names in jazz, including Stanley Turrentine, Stephanie Mills, and Marlena Shaw. The trio also features Mike Gelato on bass and Richard Cantor on drums, who have worked extensively in the tristate area.

The trio’s sound is a mix of laid back and melodic "cool jazz" standards from artists such as Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock and George Benson, along with the group’s own interpretations of classic rock, funk, and blues played with the distinctive MJT jazz twist.

The trio will be joined at the Columns by guest artist and acclaimed international jazz violinist Yuri Turchyn, one of the top violin players in the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area. He crosses cultures with gypsy jazz and world music while retaining Americana roots in a rocking jam grass style. A singer/songwriter, he composes and arranges original music while conducting a highly visible career as a featured premier performer.

The show will take place in the Columns' Foundation Room, which was once a nightclub known as "The Cellar." It was known as the room of "the perfect cocktail" and offered live music. In 1963 Charlie Fuqua's Ink Spots performed in The Cellar, in one of several resurrections of the famed 1940s band.

The suggested donation is $5. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

A borough-wide happening

The festival continues from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 23, when the tree-lined streets of Milford will once again be filled with the sound of music.

The Milford Music Festival, sponsored by Milford Presents, is borough-wide sidewalk event with music, shopping, dining and fun all over town. More than 30 businesses participate, giving music lovers a reason to experience Milford from one end of town to the other.
