Lacawac Sanctuary Environmental Education Center was recently awarded a $7,000 Community Needs grant from the Scranton Area Community Foundation for Academic Enrichment Science Program (AES).

Lacawac’s Academic Enrichment Science Program can be utilized by School Districts to address the youth science literacy crisis through hands-on, learner-centered strategies that include authentic problem-based learning experiences. The AES Program was implemented to provide all students but especially low to moderate income youth at risk for academic failure with opportunities to participate in in-school and out-of-school science curriculum enhancing programs.

“Lacawac’s AES programming is designed to support academic enrichment with opportunities to participate in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) projects and hands on experiences,” Craig Lukatch, President of Lacawac Sanctuary. “We hope to increase interest in exploring careers in STEM through partnership with colleges, universities and local corporations and improve leadership, life skills and critical thinking., support from the Foundation has made a difference in those that we serve.”
