— Thomas Jones is the recipient of this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Community Member Award.
Jones is the president of the Monroe County branch of the NAACP, and also president of Monroe County United, a community organization that focuses on building relationships and breaking barriers in the areas of education, law enforcement, spirituality and youth development.
Jones chaired the “We Care Campaign,” which was featured in NAACP’s national magazine, “The Crisis.” The initiative consisted of the chapter’s first annual black history celebration, “In America We Rise,” which united residents and community leaders through the first annual youth praise dance experience. Church members and youth from around Monroe County were united in song, praise, dance and a health awareness festival, which provided residents access to health and wellness topics. The festival was facilitated by top-notch physicians, resources and information in two locations, in East Stroudsburg and Brodheadsville.
He received the award on Jan. 15, at East Stroudsburg University’s 21st annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast.
