The total in grant awards from The Barbara J. Buchanan Fund is increasing for 2020, and the period to request an application for one of its “mini-grants’ is now open, the Greater Pike Community Foundation has announced.

"Barbara Buchanan's legacy of commitment to her community and the causes she held so dear continue as the grant cycle opens,” said Maryann Monte, chair of Greater Pike’s Grants Committee. “This year the foundation will be awarding one $1,000 grant and three $500 grants because of Barbara’s generosity."

Buchanan was a member of the Greater Pike Community Foundation in its early days and a notable local philanthropist. She died in 2018.

The deadline for applying is Friday, March 6, at 5 p.m. This annual program funds eligible local non-profit community organizations in the arts and culture, basic human needs, health, families, education, and the environment with innovative ideas for improving quality of life.

The application form and details concerning eligibility and requirements can be found at the Foundation’s website, greaterpike.org. Greater Pike encourages all applicants to read the directions carefully as they have been changed. Any prior Greater Pike grant recipient applying must be up to date in all grant reporting requirements from previous grant cycles by the deadline or their application will not be considered.

The Barbara J. Buchanan Fund at Greater Pike Community Foundation is a donor-designated fund established in 2014. The Greater Pike Community Foundation (Greater Pike) was created to enable generous individuals, families and local businesses to maximize their charitable support through organized, targeted, long-term community philanthropy. Greater Pike provides a permanent and personal way to give back to the region we love and have worked so hard to nurture and maintain.

Barbara Buchanan's enduring legacy
Barbara J. Buchanan was one of the great civic leaders of our era. Her philanthropy in Milford and Pike County was exceptional, providing support for a wide range of organizations in human services, the arts, historic preservation, and civic improvement.
Barbara’s generosity was legendary, but it wasn’t the only way she provided support. Always with a twinkle in her eye and a smile on her face, her charm brought people together and inspired them to work cooperatively to accomplish important goals.
She joined the Board of Directors of the Greater Pike Community Foundation in our infancy, helping to guide us through those critical early years, when we were establishing our credibility and educating the community as to the important role a community foundation could play. Barbara graciously agreed to be the honoree at our first annual gala, which established a precedent for Greater Pike to honor philanthropic leaders each year.
Greater Pike’s first fund is the Barbara J. Buchanan Fund, established in 2014, and it has subsequently provided financial support to more than 20 local organizations.
The Buchanan family has requested that in lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Greater Pike Community Foundation— Barbara J. Buchanan Fund, to help continue Barbara’s legacy of generosity for many years into the future.
We delight in having had the pleasure and honor or knowing and working with Barbara. She was the embodiment of Greater Pike’s motto: For Good. Forever.
