Milford. Delaware Dancers, Kindred Spirits, Pike County Historical Society, and Triversity Center for Gender and Sexual Identity are this year's recipients. The total money granted increased this year in part because of a fundraiser held last November in Buchanan's memory.

The Barbara J. Buchanan Fund of Greater Pike Community Foundation recently announced $2,500 in awards to support four nonprofit organizations: Delaware Dancers, Kindred Spirits, Pike County Historical Society, and Triversity Center for Gender and Sexual Identity.

“Barbara Buchanan’s tireless philanthropy raised millions of dollars for many diverse organizations, including this year’s recipients,” said Maryanne Monte, Greater Pike Community Foundation’s Granting Chair. “We are honored to continue her legacy and make these awards in her memory.”

A grant of $1,000 will go to Delaware Dancers for a newly choreographed full evening performance by the Hanna Q Dance Company in the fall. Three grants of $500 each will go to:

Kindred Spirits — for a series of concerts (potentially online in light of social distancing) bringing world-class musicians together (virtually) with audiences

Pike County Historical Society — for an eight-week children’s program at Milford’s “Little Red Schoolhouse"

Triversity — to support start-up costs for an LGBTQ Legal Clinic located in Milford.

The total monetary award increased this year, partly because Buchanan’s close friend and partner, Ray Weeks, sponsored a memorial service and fundraising dinner last fall.

“It was near her November 2nd birthday,” Weeks said. “It was a wonderful evening of camaraderie and good food — and so many people got up to talk about their relationship with Barbara. She would be ecstatic to know the money we raised will go to good causes that she supported. I am pleased that her memory lives on with a fund that exemplifies her philanthropic work.”
