Ruth (“Ruthie”) Smith passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2022, surrounded by her loving family. She was 90.

Born Aug. 20, 1931, in Susquehanna, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Harry Lawrence and Ruth Bridge Lawrence of Port Jervis, N.Y. She was the sister of the late Kenneth Lawrence.

Ruth was a graduate of Port Jervis High School class of 1949 where she was known for her welcoming and charismatic personality. Upon graduation, she attended the Robert Packer Hospital School of Nursing in Sayre, Pa.

She was married for 66 years to her husband and the love of her life, Alvah “Alvie” Smith, who had predeceased her in 2017. They had five children, Roxanne, Amanda, Kyle, and predeceased by daughter Bonna and son Blake.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church for over 75 years and served as an elder and Sunday School Teacher. Ruthie generously served her church and her community throughout her life. She was co-owner of Roxanne’s Clothing Store in Milford, Pa.

Upon retirement, Ruthie and Alvie owned and operated Alvie’s Emporium located on Jersey Avenue. She then enjoyed traveling and being with family and friends.

Ruth is survived by daughter Roxanne Luhrs and husband, Thomas, of Milford; daughter Amanda Smith of Matamoras, Pa., and son, Kyle Smith and wife, Virginia, of Westwood, N.J. Survivors also include her grandchildren, Marissa, Dustin, Whitney and Connor Luhrs, Kiera Smith Brock and Kaitlin Smith Diaz. Joshua Smith predeceased her. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Hudson, Kennedy, Waverly and Ainslie Diaz.

The family appreciates all the support from family and friends. A Memorial Service is being planned for the summer of 2022.
