Christa makes watershed safety No. 1 priority

I applaud Pike County commissioner candidate Christa Caceres for voicing her objections to the proposed mega-warehouse that developers want to build atop the Milford aquifer, at the junction of I-84 and Route 6. Christa, a Democrat, spoke forcefully at the recent commissioners’ meeting about the need to protect our water supply, and urged the commissioners to oppose this project. She proposed alternative ways of creating good jobs in the area, such as those in information technology and financial services.

On her campaign website (christaforpike.com), Christa notes that the Milford site is not the only one being marketed as a potential warehouse location by the Pike County Economic Development Authority. Others are at the Lords Valley and Greentown exits of I-84. She urges putting any such proposals on hold until municipal ordinances can be reviewed to ensure adequate watershed protection.

Indeed, we need to stop for a moment and consider the unintended consequences of turning the beautiful environment of Pike County into a mecca for giant distribution centers, with the resultant truck traffic, noise, air pollution and unknown impact on the water supply. Her hard-headed, commonsense approach to environmental protection is one more reason to vote for Christa Caceres for Pike County commissioner in November.
