Whether for decorating, carving or baking, pumpkins take center stage during the month of October. And all this month, local farms are providing visitors with the added pleasure of heading into the field to select just the right one. With plenty of additional activities to enjoy, a day at one of the many “pick-your-own” farms in Orange County is fun for the entire family.

“Pumpkins dot the countryside here, adding little pops of orange cheer at our farms,” said Orange County Tourism Director Susan Hawvermale. “Nestle into the hay on a wagon ride to find one for the perfect jack-o-lantern or a delicious pie.”

Popular pick-your-own farms include:

Manza Family Farm, 730 State Route 211, Montgomery: Pick your own pumpkins are grown on 20 acres of farm land and are part of the farm’s traditional Fall Festival held weekends in October. Tractor drawn hayrides, pony rides, a straw maze, farm animals, and a farm stand are featured. www.manzafamilyfarm.net

Pennings Farm, 161 South Route 94 and Warwick Turnpike, Warwick: Located on more than 60 acres of farmland, Pennings’ U-Pick season offers activities for the whole family including hayrides, pony rides, face painting, live music and outdoor dining. penningsfarmmarket.com
