Zoning changes not revealed to the public at aborted meeting

Milford Township's planning commission will take up controversial zoning amendment at its next meeting on March 26

— The final zoning amendment promised for Tuesday's planning commission meeting in Milford Township never materialized.

Too many members were absent, which stopped the meeting before it could start.

President Kevin Stroyan said the commission will continue with the same agenda, which included the proposed zoning changes plus any additional business, at its next meeting on March 26.

Township solicitor Anthony Magnotta declined to give the Courier the final amendment Tuesday. He said he had nothing further to say about zoning or Legend Property's plans.

The proposed zoning changes are the subject of intense interest because, according to details revealed to the public so far, it would greatly increase the density of development allowed in the township. Local residents worried about traffic congestion and the loss of the township's rural character have packed recent township meetings to get more information and to express their concerns.

Legend Properties wants to build three apartment buildings on 20 acres on Routes 6 & 209, adjacent to Milford Borough. A central sewage system now being studied would allow many more residences to be built than zoning now allows, Legend argues.

The zoning change would apply only to large parcels. But since Legend site is the last such parcel, some say the proposed zoning change amounts to spot zoning.
