George Max Lein Jr., Ph.D., passed away suddenly but peacefully at his home in Hemlock Farms on Tuesday, June 8, 2021. He was 66.

He was born Oct. 25, 1954, in Schenectady, N.Y. George was the first child of Jacqueline E. and George Max Lein. He grew up in Northville, N.Y., on the Great Sacandaga Lake, and his hometown always held a special place in his heart.

George was a scientist to the core and was driven by intellectual curiosity and the search for knowing. He was a history buff, an avid reader, a story teller, and was always prepared to debate any issue that might come up in discussion. He loved a good joke and always had one ready to share.

In 1980 he was hired by the Rohm and Haas company in Philadelphia, PA where he worked in very many fields including biocides, ion exchange, ceramic additives, flat panel display, ink jet, and electronic CMP technology. He worked his way from research chemist to research director and marketing manager and held numerous patents. His business responsibility took him around the world, and he deeply enjoyed sharing stories of his travels.

George was a guitar enthusiast who enjoyed playing at open mics and played liturgical music at various churches over the years. He was an avid tennis player and loved boating, skiing, hiking, and being outdoors. He maintained many collections, including guitars and other instruments, music, books, watches, and antique clocks. He enjoyed cooking, was an excellent grill chef, and he appreciated good food and good wine, especially in the company of beloved family, friends, and neighbors.

George was a loving and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and cousin, and he was committed to keeping his family’s history alive through the research and archiving of countless photos and artifacts. He was a generous provider and relished opportunities to spend time with family, planning regular vacations with his children and grandchildren and visiting them often. George was a dedicated humanitarian and contributed to many charitable organizations. His strong moral compass and philanthropic spirit were shining examples to all who loved him.

George believed strongly in the importance of education and was a mentor to many. In honor of his love for education and desire to help others pursue their dreams, donations may be made to support the future George M. Lein, Jr. Scholarship Fund at Northville Central School and sent to Northville Central School, Attn: Bruce Ellsworth, 131 Third St., P.O. Box 608, Northville, NY 12134. Checks should be made out to Northville Central School with gift restriction noted.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Maria Cirillo-Lein; children, Jessica Ortiz and Andrew Lein, and their spouses, Adam and Tina; his grandchildren, Brynn, Ava, Charlotte and Jude; his brother and sister, Joseph Lein and Kathleen Lein-DeSantis; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by both of his parents and two of his brothers, David and Paul.
