Audubon, Grey Towers present Eastern Bluebird program

MILFORD - A public education meeting about Eastern Bluebirds and monitoring the Bluebird Habitat Trail at Grey Towers National Historic Site is scheduled for Wednesday, March 21, at 7 p.m, at Grey Towers. Sponsored by the Gifford Pinchot Audubon Society, the program will feature guest speaker Ray Massacesi, a former 4-H leader and member of the Wyoming County Sportsmen’s Federation. A hunter safety educator, he is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys hunting, fishing and wildlife photography. Providing and monitoring nestboxes for bluebirds is one of the primary projects of the Gifford Pinchot Audubon Society. The Eastern Bluebird population has been impacted in recent years by several factors, including loss of habitat. As cavity nesters, these colorful birds rely on nestboxes to replace the traditional nest areas in trees and farm fence posts, which are declining in number. The Gifford Pinchot Audubon Society and Grey Towers join a network of other organizations and locations that have established bluebird nestbox trails to help rebuild the population. The Audubon Society provides a nestbox building activity at the annual Grey Towers Festival of Wood and is seeking volunteers to assist with monitoring the Grey Towers’ bluebird nestbox trail. For more information about the program or about monitoring the bluebird trail at Grey Towers call Peter Wulfhorst at 570-296-2244 (evenings) or Grey Towers at 570-296-9630.
