Crater Lake at Walpack Historical Society
WALPACK CENTER, N.J. On Sunday, Sept. 19, at 1 p.m., the Walpack Historical Society will present a program on the former community of Crater Lake, in Walpack Township. This once-vibrant community, atop the Blue Mountain ridge, was developed around a natural body of water. The lake was not formed by a volcano or meteor. Crater Lake is shown on the 1860 Hopkins Map as Round Pond, and no buildings were shown as near it. All property eventually was bought by the federal government in preparation for the Tocks Island Dam project. All residents were forced to leave. Today no buildings remain. Members of the Cassidy family had summer homes at Crater Lake, and will present their memories. Members of the public who remember the community are also invited to speak. The meeting is free and open to the public. It takes place at the Walpack M.E. Church, Main Street, Walpack Center, within the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. The Walpack Historical Society operates under agreement with the National Park Service. For more, call 973-948-4903.
