Enjoy 'Blues, Brews and BBQ' at gorge overlook
HAWLEY — The "Blues, Brews and BBQ" series at the Ledges Hotel in Hawley kicks off Memorial Day weekend and runs every Sunday through Labor Day weekend.
A rotating line-up of blues bands will perform on the Serenity Deck overlooking the scenic Wallenpaupack Gorge. Samples of local craft brews will be offered throughout the series.
On Sunday, May 29, the Lighten Up Blues Band will launch the series with the silky voice of Rose Light, who is influenced by the blues stylings of Bonnie Raitt, Janis Joplin, Etta James, and Susan Tedeschi. Randy Light, on lead guitar and mandolin, was influenced by Taj Mahal, Johnny Winter, and Canned Heat. The evening's featured craft brewery will be Evil Genius Beer Company.
Hours are from 6 to 9 p.m., and the cost is $32.50, which includes selections from the grill and sides of summer picnic fare. Guests can enjoy music and cocktails on the hotel's lawn or Stargazer Deck.
"The scenic gorge and native bluestone surroundings provide excellent acoustics, and the view of the waterfalls is spectacular," says Ledges Hotel Proprietor Justin Genzlinger.
Ledges is an historic, National Register-listed hotel. It preserves the O’Connor Glass Factory, which operated at the hotel site during the 1890s. The original building was constructed of hand-cut Pennsylvania bluestone and sits on the edge of a stunning gorge and seasonal waterfall.
To maintain the aesthetic integrity of the building, internationally acclaimed architects from Bohlin Cywinski Jackson of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., were commissioned to combine their founding principles of designing to the “character of institutions” and the “sensibilities of individuals.” It incorporates original architectural elements from the glass factory and nearby Hawley Silk Mill. Its live-edge wooden bar, benches and tabletops were made by Wayne County artist David Boyce from a century-old copper beech tree that came down on Ledges' sister property, The Sayre Mansion, in Bethlehem, Pa.
