Fundraiser to fight homelessness this Saturday

— Calling All Angels Mission is hosting its second annual Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Event, to be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12, at Jen Murphy Fitness Studio, 113 West Harford St., Milford.
This year the mission welcomes the Pike County Humane Society as a co-host. Organizer Charles Reynolds says the mission partners with local charitable organizations, churches, and government agencies "to try to make sure we reduce, and one day eliminate, the homelessness and food insecurity of our friends and neighbors in Pike County and the surrounding areas. As a community, we are always looking at the human faces of hunger and homelessness.
"One of the most overlooked populations in the fight against these situations many of our residents face is the pets of these groups. When a family goes hungry, pets often face the same trouble. When a person or family goes homeless, or are in real danger of becoming homeless, what is to become of our four-legged and winged friends? The Pike County Humane Society will be present to talk about what they are doing to make this situation more tenable."
Music will provided by Adam Zajac, Mark Ferguson, Lenny Miller, Olivia Zinn and Matthew King, among others.
And there will be food. Any local business interested in donating food, snacks and beverages is encouraged to contact the mission at 570-409-6055 or callingallangelsmission@gmail.com.
A raffle features items set aside in the thrift shop, including:
First edition Irish book of poetry and oratory
Original piece of artwork created for this event by local artist Raven
A tapestry
Other works of art
Raffle tickets will be $5 and $1 each.
Frank talk with open heartsSpeakers will tell stories and participants will hold a frank discussion on how to recognize and combat the difficulties of homelessness and food insecurity facing our nation, our state, and our communities.
Calling All Angels will be partnering again with the Ecumenical Food Pantry and the Pike County Hands of Hope.
The mission will also accept donations for the organizations involved on the night of the event — a bag of clothes, a box of food (not expired canned or dry goods), or some blankets.
A $10 donation is suggested. But Reynolds says that, "as an awareness raising event, we are more interested in getting information out there. If someone cannot afford the $10, we do not want this to keep them from coming. They can bring some items or unexpired food items, in lieu of the cash. Or if they can't afford it at all, just come. The more people understand the situations their neighbors face, that the 'face' of hunger and homelessness has changed. In order to find solutions to these tragic situations people in our communities face, we need to understand the 'why.'”
For more information, to find ways of volunteering for this or other events, or to make a donation of cash or food or raffle items, contact Charles at the thrift shop or stop by the shop at 611 Broad St. in Milford.
