Ice festival at High Point State Park

    HIGH POINT, N.J. — The Friends of High Point State Park are sponsoring a Winter Ice Festival at High Point State Park on Lake Marcia and at the interpretive center. High Point State Park is a year-round facility that offers multiple recreational activities representing all four seasons of the year. The date is Saturday Jan. 31, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will be held on the northern side of Lake Marcia near the interpretive center. The major event is a program that will show the older way of ice fishing. Unlike today’s “tip ip traps” used for catching fish through the ice come and learn how to make inexpensive home made ice fish traps from common materials. Safe ice conditions will always determine the availability of certain activities In addition attendees can bring ice skates and sleds. Other family activities will include snow sculptures that could include constructing anything from forts to caricatures - so bring your ideas. talents and tools. Families can also make snow angels. Indoor activities will also be held in the Interpretive Center by the Park Naturalist. There will be a power-point presentation up and running showing scenes of snow and ice at High Point over the years. Also a DVD will be shown about “Snowflake” Bentley and how he photographed snowflakes. Also the secrets of cutting snowflakes from paper will be included. The Friends of High Point State Park will also be providing some hot beverages and light refreshments. Please bring your own water bottles and lunch if desired. One should dress warmly and in layers. Additionally there is a privately run concessionaire that provides a rental facility for snowshoes and Cross-country skiing during the winter months at the Lake Marcia Beach house. They actually make snow and groom the trails.
