Local groups join forces for Earth Day

HAWLEY - The Pike-Wayne Earth Day Planning Committee has announced “Live Lightly” as the theme of this year’s Pike-Wayne Earth Day Festival. The festival is set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Apr. 21 at PPL’s Wallenpaupack Environmental Learning Center on Route 6 in Hawley. “Live lightly” while celebrating Earth Day with them and learn about recycling, composting, geocaching, renewable energy, resource conservation, local history, trout fishing and much more. Don’t miss this chance to test drive a kayak on Lake Wallenpaupack, weather permitting. The day will be filled with fun, educational activities and demonstrations for the whole family. You can even calculate your “ecological footprint”. Some of the many activities for children include yoga for kids at 2 p.m., live birds of prey with the Delaware Valley Raptor Center at 3 p.m., geo-caching treasure hunts, as well as great crafts and interactive games. Enjoy some wholesome goodies, which will be offered for sale by the Himalayan Institute’s Main Street Yoga Café. Don’t forget to bring your used household batteries, cell phones and inkjet cartridges to be recycled for good causes. No bag phones or car batteries will be accepted. Event participants include Himalayan Institute, Lacawac Sanctuary, Lackawaxen River Conservancy, Lake Wallenpaupack Watershed Management District, Mariposa Counseling & Natural Health Services, local herbalist Nathaniel Whitmore, Northeast PA Audubon Society, Northeast Sports, Pike County Conservation District, Pike County Recycling, Pocono Avian Research Center, Pocono Environmental Education Center, Pocono Greens, PPL, Promised Land State Park, Trout Unlimited, Wallenpaupack High School, Wallenpaupack Historical Society, Wayne County Master Gardeners and the Wayne/Pike County Farm Bureau.
