New season begins at Fort Decker

PORT JERVIS, N.Y. — The Minisink Valley Historical Society will host an 18th Century cooking demonstration on Saturday, June 28, from, 1 - 4 p.m. at the society’s stone house, the Fort Decker Museum of History, at 127 West Main St. in Port Jervis, Society volunteers will be on hand to demonstrate 18th century cooking techniques over an open fire. “Receipts” as recipes were then known for items like journey bread or hoe cake, hasty pudding, bread, roast chicken and duck, will all be cooked provided that there is good weather. Copies of the recipes will be available for visitors. Two heirloom gardens are also available for viewing and include crops that were typically grown during the late 18 century. Plant varieties such as broom corn, Bloody Butcher corn, flax, Wren’s Egg pole beans and hops will all be grown in the garden.
