Peters Valley to offer lectures at library

MILFORD — The Peters Valley School of Craft invites the public to attend a new series of free artist lectures held monthly at the Pike County Public Library on East Harford Street in Milford.
Peters Valley, located in Layton, N.J., in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreational Area, enriches lives through the learning, appreciation, and practice of the art of fine craft.
Chinese ceramics — On Wednesday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m. Peters Valley’s own Ceramics Studio Department Head, Bruce Dehnert, will present "An Angel For Liling," documenting his travel to China, as he prepared his sculptures for placement in the new Liling Ceramics Valley Museum of Art in Hunan Province. Liling is a vibrant city and, like many cities in China, is growing at an astounding pace. The museum determined that it would be best to have Dehnert, along with two artists from Europe, build his sculptures in Jingdezhen, the famous city of porcelain that is situated in Jiangxi Province, and then have the works trucked overland to Liling, where they are now permanently installed.
Modernist woodworker — On Wednesday, Nov. 8, at 6 p.m., Phil Jurus will discuss midcentury modernist wood artist Emil Milan. Milan, an influential American artist who helped shape the studio craft movement in America after World War II, taught at Peters Valley School of Craft from 1971 to 1984. The series is funded by The Greater Pike Community Foundation Richard L. Snyder Fund, and kicked off earlier in the season with a well attended lecture by renowned fiber sculptor Pat Hickman.
