Poetry is set to music in this summer concert

PORT JERVIS, N.Y. — This summer’s theme for the Tri-State Chorale is "Love, Honor, and Poetry," a celebration of famous and lesser-known poetry set to choral music.
The chorale's summer concert, led by conductor and music director Matthew Rupcich, will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 17, at Drew United Methodist Church in Port Jervis, N.Y. The program includes excerpts from Brahms’ Liebeslieder Waltzer, Persichetti’s setting of four e. e. cummings’ poems: Dominic Has a Doll; Maggie, Milly, Molly, and May; Nouns to Nouns; and Uncles.
Also on the evening’s program is a not-yet-published 20th-century setting by Elam Sprenkle of Walt Whitman’s poem "Crossing Brooklyn Ferry."
The CaPAA (Creative and Performing Arts Academy of Scranton, Pa.) Children’s Chorus will sing a portion of the concert on their own, and join the Tri-State Chorale in two selections, "Set Me as a Seal" by Richard Nuance, and the concert finale, "Freedom Trilogy."
Also included are an arrangement of Gregorian chant (Kyrie de Angelis), Zulu folk songs (Haleluya Pelo Tsa Rona/Siyahamba), and a Christian hymn (Amazing Grace).
