Program: 'Gifford Pinchot and the South Seas'
MILFORD — Never-before-exhibited artifacts from the South Seas, brought back by the Pinchot family after a nine-month excursion in the 1920s, will be part of a new exhibit at the Pike County Library in Milford.
Kicking off the exhibit is “Gifford Pinchot and the South Seas," to be presented at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 1, in the library's Community Room. It's part of the Lunch and Learn series offered this winter by the Grey Towers Heritage Association about the accomplishments of Gifford Pinchot, the Pennsylvania governor who founded the U.S. Forest Service. There is no fee and participants should bring their own lunch. Coffee will be provided.
The South Seas exhibit will remain at the library through early March. Artifacts to be displayed include items brought back from the Galapagos Islands.
Two other events about Gifford are planned for the spring Grey Towers National Historic Site in Milford is Pinchot's ancestral home.:
Monday, March 21, at 11:30 a.m. — The Grey Towers Heritage Association and the U.S. Forest Service will screen the documentary, “Gifford Pinchot’s Conservation Legacy,” one in a series of documentaries produced by WITF spotlighting Pennsylvania’s conservation heritage. A Q&A will follow.
Monday, April 18, at 11:30 a.m. — A presentation will be offered on Cornelia Pinchot’s political activism and her role as wife of Governor Pinchot.
The March and April programs require pre-registration and pre-payment of $10 for heritage association members and $14 for non-members. The programs include a catered lunch and a brief tour of the Grey Towers mansion.
