River Valley artists to open 'Kindred Spirits' show
DEERPARK — Art About Town, sponsored by the River Valley Artists Guild of Port Jervis, N.Y., presents "Kindred Spirits," an exhibit featuring the works of Lindsay Brown and Lauryn de Leeuw.
These artists use artistic transformation in their work, and share a similar style of working with acrylic paint. They have created their own vision of personal emotion and non-verbal feeling.
“There is an irreconcilable opposition of visual elements that results in perpetual movement on the picture surface," said Brown, a Milford resident.
Their work will be on exhibit from Dec. 11 through Feb. 12.
Mayor’s Office, Port JervisBrown’s powerful paintings revolve around a central theme. Her distinct visual elements result in a linear gestural style as well as a rectangular grid style of painting. Though non-representational, her works propel the viewer into a sense of deep space alternating with the recognizable. One can see the influences of Matisse, Miro, Kandinsky, Mondrian, and Twombly in these her works. Lauryn de Leeuw’s work will be on view as well.
Bon Secours, Port JervisDe Leeuw describes herself as an “artist, creator and free spirit.” She believes that “art, like love, cannot be defined, it comes from a passion within; it cannot come from a formula or a set of predefined conditions.”
De Leeuw is often referred to as an abstract expressionist artist because of the Willem de Kooning influence in many of her paintings. Her style can vary, but her influence can be determined: Japanese Edo art, Titian, Cezanne, van Gogh, Matisse, Picasso and de Kooning. Her sensuous designs are bold in composition, always a little different, and vibrant in color. A member of the Chelsea Arts Club (London) and the New York Students Art League, she has exhibited in Amsterdam, London and New York and her art is owned worldwide. Lindsay Brown’s work will be on view as well.
Deerpark Town HallJoan Kehlenbeck will show her winter-themed works. She is president of the River Valley Artists Guild, and has shown her oil paintings and pastel drawings regionally. She includes important local, historic buildings and scenes in her work.
In 2016, Kehlenbeck was awarded the Individual Artist, Orange County Art Award. The hhow also includes various River Valley Guild artists.
