Smoky Joe Fun Day coming to museum

— Celebrate a day dedicated to Pike County’s baseball legend.
The Smoky Joe Wood Family Fun Day will be held from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24,at The Columns Museum, 608 Broad St., Milford. Highlights include live music by The Pick Up Artists, family-friendly games, a beer garden, tie-dying, and a barbecue.
“Smoky Joe" pitched for the Boston Red Sox and led them to three victories in the 1912 World Series. He was dubbed “Smoky” in honor of his blazing fastball.
He spent quite a bit of time on his family farm in Shohola. When he could no longer pitch due to an injury, his love of the game led him to play outfielder for the Cleveland Indians. After he retired from professional baseball, he went on to coach at Yale University.
The Columns Museum and Pike County Historical Society will host the family-oriented event at the museum. The music will be a mix of rock and roll, blues and country, and will feature the “drum stylings” of Steve Tanzcyn.
The traditional “baseball darts” competition will be held at 3 p.m.. Return veteran participants and past winners are invited to try their luck or defend their titles. Rookies are also welcome to join in the fun. The coveted Smoky Joe trophy will be awarded to the winner.
Hamburgers, hot dogs, peanuts and cracker jacks will be available in the beer garden. "We will introduce the Smoky Joe Dog, for those of you who dare!" say the organizers.
Games include baseball toss, water balloon competition, bucket brigade, golf putt, and more All games are free, with small prizes for the kids for their efforts.
The museum, home of the famed Lincoln Flag, will be open for tours. The Hiawatha Stagecoach will be out for viewing and photo ops.
Other upcoming events include the Readers and Writers Festival the weekend of Sept. 30 to Oct. 1.
