Steamtown honors veterans and their families with free day

SCRANTON — Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton will honor military veterans and their families with an entrance fee-free weekend for everyone starting on Veterans Day, Friday, Nov. 11.
The weekend includes complimentary admission to the park grounds, museum complex exhibits, and scheduled walking tours, but will not include train rides and amenity fees charged by the park.
In addition, all active duty military members and their dependents will be able to obtain an annual park pass, an $80 value, at no charge during their visit. The America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass provides entrance to all national parks, national wildlife refuges, national forests, and many other Federal lands — more than 2,000 in all. Steamtown National Historic Site is the only place in the National Park System where the story of steam railroading and the people who made it possible is told. The historic, industrial railroad yard site features a visitor orientation center with exhibits describing how the former Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad’s Scranton Yards evolved from 1850 to present, a 250-seat digital surround-sound theater showing the park movie, “Steel and Steam” throughout the day, and steam-era railroading history, roundhouse and technology museums that tell a multimedia-rich story of the significance of railroad transportation to the U.S. Industrial Revolution. Visitors may also join a scheduled Locomotive Shop tour. For a small charge – $5 for all ages 6 and older – visitors may also enjoy the “Scranton Limited” short train ride inside the railroad yards.
