— Take a musical romp through the Swing Era with Little Big Band at a June 10 celebration the Pike Historical Society's 87th anniversary.
A beef and brew dinner with dessert and coffee is offered along with the entertainment for $40.
This year the society will honor the contributions of volunteer Jim Levell, who created and worked on the society's newsletter, "Columns," for more 17 years. Working with Museum Director Lori Strelecki, the team put out more than 50 of these popular publications, three times a year.
The historical society was founded in 1930 with Gifford Pinchot as its honorary first president, and has been keeping Pike County's history alive ever since.
Before obtaining the building known as "the Columns," the society used for its displays various storefronts and the rooms on the second floor of the Community House. The famous blood-stained Lincoln Flag once hung over a shower rod in a second story window of the Community House in direct defiance of every rule of textile conservation known to humankind. Today, the flag is displayed in its own airtight case and preserved with Argon, a noble gas used to preserve textiles, paper artifacts — even mummies. Greg Enzor completed the preservation project a few years ago, with help from Bob Hartman and Bobby Kyle.
