Thurman Barker Quartet to play Tusten Theatre

NARROWSBURG, N.Y. — The Thurman Barker Quartet will perform original jazz compositions at 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 20, at the Tusten Theatre, at 210 Bridge St. in Narrowsburg, N.Y.
Born into the vibrant Chicago music scene, legendary drummer and percussionist Thurman Barker began studying at the American Conservatory of Music at age 13. By 17, he was playing professionally.
As a student at Roosevelt Musical College, he began to explore works by pioneering composers including Robert Kraft, Edgar Varese, Bela Bartok and Ralph Shapey. Barker created the jazz studies program at Bard College, and has been professor of music there since 1993. He lives in Sullivan County, N.Y.
Led by Barker, the quartet also features Miles Barnett on tenor saxophone and clarinet, Noah Barker on piano, and Dean Torrey on bass. They will perform original jazz music as well as excerpts from Barker’s new orchestral piece, “South Side Suite.”

The performance is part of the Tusten Theatre Spring Cultural Series, which will conclude with “Save the Last Tango” (Sullivan County Chamber Orchestra) on Sunday, June 11, at 4 p.m.
