Time to clean up the river
Dingmans Ferry Kittatinny Canoes is preparing for the 19th annual “On and Under the Delaware River Cleanup” on July 21 through July 24. During the 2007 cleanup a total of 37.5 tons of trash, aluminum cans, scrap metal and just plain garbage was collected and recycled or properly disposed of by 280 volunteers and Kittatinny employees. The numbers get more impressive as we look back to what was collected over the past 17 years. With an average of 435 volunteers, Kittatinnys’ River Cleanup has rid the river of 7,491 tires, 7,899 aluminum cans and over 331 tons of trash, with oddities from as small as a pair of false teeth to as large as a 1962 pick up truck. Volunteers canoe, wade, snorkel and scuba dive to cover 70 miles of underwater and shore lines from Ten Mile River, N.Y. to the Delaware Water Gap in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
