It reaches the brain quickly, within 7-10 seconds. Once there, it stimulates neurotransmitters responsible for feelings of well being. The effects of nicotine soon wear off, and the smoker is cued to light up again. Quit, and put this time and health consuming cycle behind you. Prepare to deal with withdrawal symptoms. Symptoms of recovery can include mood disturbances, increased appetite, fatigue, insomnia, constipation, and cravings for a cigarette. By planning ahead, you can increase the chance of success. Consider medications formulated to ease withdrawal. Keep healthy, low cal snacks on hand. Increase your exercise routine. Set up a walking or running program with a friend. Relax, take naps, do yoga, biofeedback, meditation, and deep breathing. Drink plenty of fluids. wait out the urge. This will pass. Most withdrawal symptoms decrease after the first few days. Penn State Cooperative Extension Pike County, 514 Broad Street, Milford, PA 18337, will meet for five consecutive Wednesdays beginning Sept. 1, at 6 p.m. At the Pike Physical Therapy & Fitness Center, 1346 Route 739, Dingmans Ferry, it will meet for five consecutive Mondays, beginning Sept. 13, at 6 p.m. These groups provide counseling, nicotine replacement, and support.
