Local derby champs compete in Akron - Some 50 supporters go along for the All American Soap Box Derby finals in Ohio

PORT JERVIS, N.Y. The 2008 Port Jervis Soap Box Derby’s local champions recently traveled out to Akron, Ohio to compete in the All American Soap Box Derby held July 25 & 26. More than 50 Port Derby supporters made the voyage with them to show their support of the drivers as well, braving a 7 hour road trip to do so. Masters Champion, David Busch, 13, Super Stock Champion Kristina Santacruz, 10, and Stock Champion Mackenzye Leroy, 12, all spent a full week in Akron, Ohio with their families as they prepared for their races on Saturday, July 26. All three champs made Port Jervis proud as they competed against hundreds of other derby champions. They met and competed against champs from all over the world, including drivers from Guam, Japan and Germany. Representing the local derby’s newest division, the Super Kids Division; 2008 champ, 14-year-old Nicholas Zingaro went to Akron to race toward a victory. Nick faired well as he got to race the famous derby downs hill three times. Nick was even featured in the local Akron newspaper as he crossed the finish line with his amazing enthusiasm. All four champs had a wonderful time out in Akron. “This was so much fun!” said local champ, Kristina Santacruz. “I hope I win again next year!”
