Bernice G. Hazen

    Bernice G. Hazen of Matamoras, Pa., died on Wednesday March 16, 2016, at home, with her family by her side, after her long battle with cancer. She was 77.
    Daughter of the late Charles Wesley Gilpin and Bernice Chapman Gilpin, she was born Feb. 11, 1939, in Ledgedale, Pa. She was a devoted Army wife to her high school sweetheart, the late Colonel David Hazen, for 52 years.
    Survivors include four children, William of Lovettsville, Va., Michael from Anchorage, Alaska, Dianne of Matamoras, Pa,, and Carol of Huntington, W.V.; seven grandchildren, Abigayle, David, Jessica, Bryce, Megan, Emma Grace, and Carly; sisters, Penny, Sarah, Marjorie, Doris, Susan and Lois; and her brother, Wilmer.
    She was preceded in death by her brothers, Richard, Simon, Robert, Harold, Merle, and Charles Gilpin.
    She was an Army wife who moved more than 20 times with her husband and family. She was an active member and served many years with the Military Wives’ Club, American Legion, VFW Post Ladies Auxilary, and Elks.
    Long known for her positive outlook on life and her sense of humor, she was always ready to entertain and make friends wherever she went. She enjoyed socializing and playing mahjong, bridge, bowling, and golf with her friends.
    A memorial celebration of her life was held March 18 at Stroyan Funeral Home, Milford, Pa. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Milford, on March 19, with a reception following.
