Charles D. Lau Jr.
Charles D. Lau Jr. died on Thursday, March 19, 2015, at his home in Milford. He was 72.
Son of the late Charles D. Sr., and Anna (VanderMuelen) Lau, he was born on Jan. 20, 1943.
He graduated from Patterson High School and attended Orange County Community College, N.Y., and Volusia County Community College, Fla. He served in the Navy from 1960-66 on the SS Kenneth D. Bailey and was a police officer with the Ormond Beach and Port Orange, Fla., Police Force. Later, he became a detective sergeant with the Orange City Police Department.
His last job as a security officer was his favorite job. He was in charge of all radio communication at Daytona Beach Speedway. He worked with many of the NASCAR drivers and escorted several U.S. Presidents through the gates. His love for NASCAR continued throughout his life.
He was an avid musician. He loved singing, playing the guitar, and writing songs. He played in several bands and loved to jam with his cousin Garry and anyone who was interested. He was a church worship music leader, played in the church Praise Team, and sang solos. He sang for many nursing home patients, where he was able to bring forth the gospel and extend joy to others.
He was a lifetime member of the VFW, the NRA, and the Tin Can Sailors Association. He was a charter member of the Martin Guitar Owners Club. He won many state awards for excellence in marksmanship. He also loved to fish, read, and watch television.
Survivors include his wife, Sylvia; daughter, Michelle Cox and her husband, Doyle, of Cocoa, Fla.; two stepsons, Timothy M. Greening and wife, Carlee, of Scotrun, Pa., and Sean Greening of Milford; two brothers, Leonard Lau and wife, Agnes, of Palm Beach, Fla., and Robert Lau and wife, Lilah, of Greer, S.C.; a brother-in-law, Stanley Dembeck and fiancée, Donna Macedonio, of Port Jervis, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Wayne Cox and wife, Amanda, of Louisville, Ky., and Julius Greening of Scotrun, Pa.; one great-grandson, Wyatt Cox of Louisville, Ky.; his aunt, Marie Jeryc of North Carolina; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated with military honors at the First Baptist Church in Port Jervis.
