Denise Velon Sweeney

Denise Velon Sweeney died on Sunday, March 29, 2015, at Woodland Ponds in New Paltz, N.Y. She was 83.

Daughter of Josephine and Henri Velon, she was born in Pelham, N.Y., in 1931.

She was pre-deceased by her husband, Edward Sweeney, in 1976.

Survivors include two children, Barbara Sweeney Hufnagel, wife of Carl Hufnagel, of Dingman’s Ferry, and Tim Sweeney, husband of Laurel Sweeney, of Stone Ridge, N.Y.; four grandchildren; and a sister, Jeanne Mcwaters of North Bennington, Vermont.

She attended Packard Junior College in New York, N.Y. Her employment included Bennington College, Vassar College, Union Pacific Railroad and Iron Mountain Record Management. In retirement she worked as the registrar for the Girl Scouts of Ulster County, N.Y. She was very active at Christ the King Episcopal Church, Stone Ridge, N.Y., sharing her many skills and art work in designing and sewing altar linens and decorating the church for holidays.

A memorial service will be held at Christ the King Episcopal Church, Stone Ridge, N.Y., on Saturday, May 16, at 11 a.m.
