George Sandberg
George Sandberg of Goshen, formerly of the Town of Wallkill, N.Y., and Closter, N.J., died on Monday, July 18, 2016, at Glen Arden in Goshen, N.Y. He was 89.
Son of Gwen Hallam Sandberg and John Winslow Sandberg and stepson of Hazel Sandberg, he was born Sept. 6, 1926, in Ridgefield Park, N.J.
He was the owner of several businesses, most notably Exxon Redistribution, an auto parts and supply inventory service in Bergen County, N.J. Working with the Exxon representative, his territory was consistently one of the highest earning regions in the country.
He loved animals and they loved him. He spent more than 45 years, until the age of 85, taking care of his beloved horses 365 days a year. He also brought home dogs and birds and rescued abused and unwanted animals. In 1983, he and Grace moved to the home that they would call Lucky Horse Farm, where his animal family expanded to include 25-plus deer, more dogs, numerous cats and their kittens, a family of groundhogs, and horses that found a place to live out their lives.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Grace M. Sandberg; two daughters, Jeanne Nicolosi and husband, Roy, of Montvale, N.J., and Virginia Ratsep and husband, Raoul, of Greenwood Lake, N.Y.; six grandchildren, Kaitlyn Ratsep of Greenwood Lake, N.Y., Jessica Slaven and husband, Chris, of Boulder, Colo., Matthew Nicolosi and wife, Emily, of Mahwah, N.J., Christopher Nicolosi of New York, N.Y., and Julia Nicolosi of Montvale, N.J.; three great-grandchildren, Blythe and Bennett Nicolosi and Natalia Slaven; a brother, Alfred Sandberg of Milford, Pa.; and five nephews and three nieces.
He was predeceased by his brother, John G. Sandberg.
A memorial service was held July 23 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Montvale, N.J.
